MARKET OPEN

Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 29, 2026. Wall Street just started asking AI for receipts.

Alphabet is down 10.5% pre-market after weak search ad results and a sharp jump in cash burn from its AI buildout. Microsoft is up 3.5% after a big cash-flow beat and a strong cloud forecast.

Same AI bet. Opposite reactions.

The setup: Tech-heavy indexes start in the red. But the Dow and small caps are green, and that tells you where money is going today.

What's moving the market: Alphabet’s results set off selling and brought AI worries back, which is weighing on the tech-heavy indexes. Dow and Russell 2000 futures are rising, a sign of rotation, not panic.

TODAY’S CATALYSTS

  • 8:30 AM — Q3 GDP, September PCE inflation, jobless claims

  • Before open — Eli Lilly, Mastercard, Caterpillar, Merck

  • After close — Amazon, Intel, Coinbase, Strategy, Starbucks

Most important: The 8:30 PCE print. Core PCE is expected to rise 3.1% from a year ago, with headline PCE expected at 3.6%. A hot number would strengthen the case for a December rate hike.

THE BIG STORY
Google Grew 103%. The Stock Fell 10%

The business beat. The cash didn’t.

Revenue rose 25% to $127.6 billion, and Google Cloud surged 103%. But capital spending hit $51.36 billion and free cash flow came in at negative $9.07 billion, far worse than the negative $2.70 billion analysts expected.

Search is the engine that funds the AI spending, and it missed expectations. Next year gets more expensive. Alphabet expects capex above $200 billion this year and over $300 billion in 2027.

Compare that with Microsoft. Revenue of $92.28 billion beat estimates, and Azure grew 48%.

What this means for investors: The market isn’t punishing AI. It’s punishing AI that doesn’t pay for itself yet. Watch free cash flow more closely than revenue growth this earnings season.

BREAKING NEWS
The Fed Holds, But Leans Toward a Hike

The Fed held rates steady yesterday, though two officials voted for a hike. Policymakers gave no clear signal on whether they’ll raise rates in December.

That makes today’s PCE report the first big test. Analysts at PIMCO expect a quarter-point hike in December, with one or two more possible after that.

Oil is the wildcard. Crude’s rally faded late yesterday after a report that Vice President JD Vance contacted an Iranian hard-liner to restart peace talks.

Lower oil would ease inflation pressure. A collapse in talks would do the opposite.

"Fastest Revenue Growth of Any Company in Recorded History."

$1 billion → $50 billion in one year?!

The IPO could be 41X bigger than the Google, Microsoft, and Amazon IPOs combined.

PORTFOLIO INSIGHTS

If PCE comes in hot → December hike odds rise; pressure on long-duration growth stocks and REITs.

If oil falls on peace progress → relief for consumers and airlines; headwind for energy producers.

If the 10-year holds above 5% → better yields for income investors in Treasuries and CDs; tougher math for richly valued stocks.

TODAY’S BIG IDEA

The Sellers of AI Shovels

The opportunity: Companies that receive Big Tech’s capex as revenue.

Why now: Alphabet’s $51 billion quarterly spend hurt its own cash flow. It’s someone else’s sales. Vertiv jumped almost 17% yesterday on a bullish long-term AI infrastructure demand forecast.

Bull case: Spending plans for 2027 keep rising, extending the order pipeline.

Risk: If investors force hyperscalers to cut capex, suppliers get hit first.

Watch: Amazon’s capex guidance tonight.

RISK RADAR

The 5% 10-Year

The 10-year Treasury yield is at 5.05%, up again this morning.

That matters more than any single earnings report. Higher yields raise borrowing costs, pressure valuations, and make a 5% “risk-free” return competitive with stocks.

Watch: Whether yields climb further after the 8:30 data.

THE WATCHLIST

  • GOOGL -10.5% — Cash burn overshadowed cloud growth. Watch whether the selling deepens or buyers step in.

  • MSFT +3.5% — Proof that AI spending can come with strong cash flow.

  • AMZN — Reports tonight. Consensus for AWS growth sits around 37%, with Bank of America at roughly 40%.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

Money is rotating toward cash generation.

Oracle surged 11% after an investor day that laid out new financial targets, driven by its long-term free cash flow outlook. Dow and Russell 2000 futures are up while the Nasdaq slides.

The signal: investors aren’t leaving AI. They’re getting picky about who pays for it.

CHART OF THE DAY:

Alphabet Q3 2026: Spending Outran the Cash

Category

Q3 2026 (billions)

Capex

51.4

Operating cash flow

42.3

Google cloud revenue

30.7

Free cash flow

Alphabet spent more on capex last quarter than it generated in operating cash. Capex of $51.36 billion exceeded operating cash flow of $42.29 billion.

That gap is why a 103% cloud quarter still sent the stock lower.

🔔 OPENING BELL HOT TAKES

  • Some investors say hyperscalers no longer get a free pass to spend without limits. Reuters

  • Alphabet posted its first revenue and earnings miss in nearly four years. CNBC

  • Stocks edged higher after the Fed, while oil gave back gains on renewed Iran talk hopes. Bloomberg

  • F5 plunged more than 20% on weak guidance and a downgrade. Motley Fool

  • Sprouts Farmers Market fell 22% after hours on a broad earnings miss. CappNotes

THE BOTTOM LINE

The AI trade isn’t over, but the rules changed: growth alone no longer gets rewarded. Today’s PCE print and Amazon’s results tonight will set the tone for the rest of the week.

We’d stay selective, favoring companies whose AI spending already shows up in cash flow.

P.S. Alex called Nvidia when it was an 11-cent gaming stock (split-adjusted). He says this company has the same signature: extraordinary technology, extraordinary growth - and almost nobody paying attention yet. November 20 is approaching. Watch now.
