MARKET OPEN

Good morning, it’s Friday, October 16, 2026. Markets head into Friday trying to decide which worries them more: inflation, or the bill for AI.

Futures are modestly green after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to tip his hand overnight. The 10-year yield sits near a three-week low, and oil is holding near $97.

The setup: This week’s hot CPI and PPI prints revived fears of another rate hike. CoreWeave’s debt scare also dragged chip stocks lower.

Thursday showed where the money went instead: blue chips, small caps and defensives.

Today is about whether that rotation sticks.

What's moving the market: Warsh’s non-answer cooled bets on an October hike. Treasuries are holding Thursday’s rally, and AI credit fears have eased, at least for now.

TODAY’S CATALYSTS

  • Pre-market: Truist, Travelers, Regions, M&T and Citizens earnings

  • 8:30 AM: September import and export prices

  • 9:15 AM: September industrial production

  • 1:00 PM: Baker Hughes rig count

  • Saturday: Fed blackout begins

Most important: Truist and the regional banks. A clean read on loan growth and commercial real estate would support Thursday’s rotation into financials and small caps.

Chemical-Free Farming Is Now Open To Investors

For decades, farmers have relied on herbicides and heavy equipment to control weeds.

Greenfield Robotics is working to change that.

BOTONY robots navigate crop rows and mechanically remove weeds, giving farmers an alternative to blanket herbicide applications and intensive tillage.

The potential benefits are significant:

  • Clean food supply

  • Reduce reliance on agricultural chemicals

  • Reduce unnecessary soil disturbance

  • Help farmers protect crops from weed competition

  • Support more sustainable farming practices

And the market is enormous.

Greenfield estimates more than 250 million acres of broadacre cropland in the U.S., with more than 100 million acres in its initial serviceable market.

With the Reg A+ now live, investors can participate in Greenfield Robotics' growth story.

THE BIG STORY
Wall Street Just Saw AI’s Credit Card Bill

CoreWeave plunged 15.5% Wednesday as investors questioned how it’s financing its expansion, then bounced 6% Thursday to $69.69. The rebound came after Jensen Huang said CoreWeave’s finances are strengthening and its borrowing costs are falling.

The bond market is less convinced. The cost to insure CoreWeave’s debt against default has climbed to about 1,000 basis points. The company also carries more than $40 billion in debt.

This isn’t a one-stock problem. About a third of AI capex is now funded with debt, and AI-related debt issuance dropped to $23B in September from $113B in June, per the FT. The Philly semiconductor index has dropped roughly 9% this week.

What this means for investors: The AI trade is splitting in two. Companies that fund their build-out from cash flow look very different from those that fund it with borrowed money. Check which side your AI exposure sits on.

BREAKING NEWS
Inflation Ran Hot. The Fed Chair Didn’t Blink.

Core CPI rose 0.3% in September versus 0.2% expected. Headline inflation is running at 3.7% a year.

Wholesale prices were worse. PPI jumped 1.3% for the month and 6.3% over 12 months. Those were the biggest monthly and annual gains since 2022.

Overnight in Bangkok, Warsh said he doesn’t prejudge meetings and won’t say now what he might do later this year. Goldman reads that as a pause. Traders see a 72.3% chance of a hold on Oct. 27–28, while most expect a December hike.

Why it matters today: These were the last Fed comments before Saturday’s blackout. Until the decision, the data does the talking.

For AI Investors Who Do Their Homework Before They Buy.

Most people will chase the next AI IPO on hype alone and get burned. If you'd rather understand the timeline, the retail access window, and the risk buried in the filings before you commit a dollar, the free briefing is built for you.

PORTFOLIO INSIGHTS

If the 10-year stays above 5% → Long-duration growth stocks stay under pressure, and savers can lock in yields last seen around 2002.

If Brent holds above $100 → Energy producers get supportive cash flow, while costs keep rising for airlines and consumers.

If AI credit stress spreads → Leveraged AI infrastructure names stay volatile, and quality dividend payers could keep pulling in rotation money.

TODAY’S BIG IDEA

The 10-Year Treasury at 5%

Why now: The 10-year touched 5.33% Wednesday, near highs last seen in early 2002. It has since pulled back to about 5.08%.

Bull case: If AI stress or slower growth sends investors toward safety, bond prices rise, as they did Thursday. You collect roughly 5% while you wait.

Risk: Sticky inflation and a possible December hike could push yields higher first.

Watch: The Oct. 28 Fed decision, and whether 5.33% holds as the ceiling.

RISK RADAR

Energy is Leaking Into Everything

Core PPI rose 5% year over year, against 4.4% expected. Energy costs appear to be spreading into other categories, especially airfares, as airlines absorb higher diesel prices.

The EIA expects Brent to average $105 in the fourth quarter.

Watch: Whether today’s import prices confirm that pass-through.

THE WATCHLIST

  • CRWV +5.9% (Thu): The bellwether for AI credit. Watch whether its bonds stabilize, not just the stock.

  • TSM: Record Q3: $46.7B in revenue, up 41%, with a 66.4% gross margin. The stock still slipped nearly 2%. Strong numbers weren’t enough this week.

  • WMT +3% (Thu): Deutsche Bank upgraded it, arguing that inflation strengthens Walmart’s value pitch. It’s a defensive way to play a hot-CPI tape.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

Money is rotating out of AI and into nearly everything else.

Thursday: Dow +1.08%, Russell 2000 +1.38%, Nasdaq flat. For the week, the Dow is tracking about +1% while the Nasdaq is down more than 2%.

Crypto isn’t catching those flows. Spot bitcoin ETFs took in just $5.06M on Oct. 15, versus $2.65B for all of September.

Wholesale inflation just posted its hottest reading since 2022, yet the 10-year dropped more than 10 basis points Thursday as investors fled the tech rout for bonds.

When bonds trade on AI fear rather than inflation fear, that’s a signal worth respecting.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Futures are modestly higher, but the week’s message is clear: inflation is sticky, the Fed isn’t cutting, and the market is punishing AI businesses that run on borrowed money. The rotation into blue chips, small caps and defensives is the trend to respect.

Favor strong balance sheets, and let 5% Treasuries pay you while you wait for better entry points.
