MARKET OPEN

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Markets are setting up for a split-screen Wednesday.

Nasdaq futures are up about 0.4% after SpaceX and Super Micro posted big numbers. Meanwhile, Brent crude is up about 1% near $110 a barrel and WTI is near $99, on worries about Saudi oil infrastructure and Red Sea shipping. The 10-year yield sits at 5.12%.

Overnight, Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla have started formal merger talks. Tesla and Meta report after the bell.

The setup: AI is back in charge this morning. Whether it stays there depends on what Meta and Tesla say about spending tonight, and whether oil gives bonds any relief.

What’s moving the market: Futures are higher after Tuesday’s mixed close, helped by strong earnings from some of the biggest AI winners.

TODAY’S CATALYSTS

  • 10:30 AM: EIA weekly crude inventories

  • All day: Lam Research, Texas Instruments, IBM earnings

  • After close: Tesla, Meta earnings

  • 5:30 PM: Tesla earnings call

Most important: Meta’s capex guidance. There’s no major economic data on today’s calendar, so tonight’s AI spending numbers will set tomorrow’s tone.

What Happens AFTER the AI Bubble Bursts?

A lot of investors are starting to worry about when the AI bubble will burst. Gold analyst Garrett Goggin is studying something far more lucrative than AI: what happens next?

Three times in the last century, speculative manias ended with enormous amounts of capital rotating into hard assets.

Garrett believes it's about to happen again – and he's identified four gold miners positioned directly in front of this potential flood of money.

THE BIG STORY
Musk’s $3.5 Trillion Question Just Got Real

The boards of SpaceX and Tesla have each formed special committees of independent directors to review a possible merger. At current market values, the combined company would be worth roughly $3.5 trillion.

Musk supports a deal but is careful about it. He said no agreement has been reached, there’s no guarantee one will be, and both sets of shareholders would have to approve it.

That changes how to read Tesla’s results tonight. Wall Street expects flat revenue of about $28.1B and EPS down 10% to $0.45. In Q2, Tesla’s operating margin fell to 1.4%.

What this means for investors: If you own TSLA, you now own a car company, an energy company, and an option on a merger. Watch the call for any detail on deal structure and valuation. That could move the stock more than auto margins.

BREAKING NEWS
Iran Talks Stall, Oil Holds Near $110

Reuters reported that Iran is dragging out talks with the U.S. ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms while preparing for possible new military strikes. Tehran’s conditions include ending the U.S. blockade of its ports and lifting sanctions on its oil exports.

For context, Brent was around $72 before the Iran war. It’s now about 50% higher.

Bond traders have noticed. One outlook warns that $110+ oil directly threatens global disinflation, with European natural gas futures nearing four-year highs. Markets see an 85% chance the Fed holds rates at its October meeting.

I Beat Buffett by 6X

I’m not saying this to brag – I want you to understand how much money you can make if you get in early on a massive bull market in gold: Warren Buffett's best stretch across sixty years never broke 36% a year… my top-performing portfolio returned 216% a year, compounded.

Put $10,000 in at the start of 2024 and today it's worth about $131,000. I'm not smarter than Buffett — I just understand one thing he doesn't track: what happens to the best small miners when a bull market hits its buyout phase.

PORTFOLIO INSIGHTS

If Meta raises its spending guidance: AI hardware and chip-equipment names (SMCI, LRCX) could benefit. Meta’s own margins would take the hit.

If oil stays above $100: Expect pressure on consumers, airlines, and anything that depends on discretionary spending. Energy producers keep their tailwind.

If the 10-year holds above 5%: Long-duration growth stocks face higher hurdles. Savers and income investors get the best yields in years.

TODAY’S BIG IDEA

The 5% Treasury

The opportunity: Locking in income at yields retirees haven’t seen in nearly two decades.

Why now: The 10-year is at 5.12% and the Fed is expected to hold. Rising oil is keeping yields high.

Bull case: If inflation cools or growth slows, yields fall and bond prices rise. You keep the income either way.

Risk: An oil-driven inflation spike could push yields higher still, which means lower prices on bonds you already own.

Watch: Whether the 10-year holds above 5% into the Fed’s late-October meeting.

RISK RADAR

Positioning in Bonds

Big money is betting against bonds. Speculators added 91,621 contracts to their net short position in 10-year Treasury futures, bringing it to 988,102.

Crowded trades can unwind quickly. A surprise Iran deal or an oil collapse could force those shorts to cover, pushing yields down sharply.

Watch: Any real progress in U.S.-Iran talks.

THE WATCHLIST

  • SPCX +10.4%: Q3 EPS was $0.35 on $14.57B in revenue, versus expectations of $0.14 and $12.74B.

  • SMCI +12.4%: The company raised its Q1 revenue outlook to $18.5–19.5B, up from $14.5–15.5B. That’s a read-through for AI server demand.

  • NFLX -6.4%: Netflix beat on EPS, but revenue came in just under estimates.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

Money is moving past the megacaps. On Tuesday, the Russell 2000 jumped 1.65% and the equal-weight S&P 500 ETF beat the cap-weighted index by nearly a full point. NYSE advancers beat decliners 1,614 to 559.

Morgan Stanley’s Mike Wilson thinks the long correction in the average stock is in its final stages.

Small caps and the equal-weight S&P led on Tuesday, while the Nasdaq and chip stocks lagged. That’s the opposite of most of 2026’s market, which has been carried by a handful of tech giants.

One day doesn’t make a trend, but if Meta and Tesla disappoint tonight, money already rotating into the rest of the market has somewhere to go.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The AI trade is back this morning, but $110 oil and a 5% 10-year yield set a high bar for it. Tonight’s Meta and Tesla reports decide whether Tuesday’s broadening rally keeps going or tech takes the lead again.

We’d stay balanced: lock in some of these yields, and let tonight’s guidance tell you how much AI exposure to add.
