MARKET OPEN

Good morning, it’s Monday, October 19, 2026. Wall Street is trying to buy the dip. Carefully.

At 5 a.m. ET, Nasdaq 100 futures were up about 1% and S&P 500 futures about 0.5%, after the worst week for tech since June. Oil is sliding and the 10-year yield has pulled back to about 5.09%.

Last week, chip stocks fell for eight straight sessions, the sector’s longest losing streak since the 2008 financial crisis.

The setup: Today’s bounce has no catalyst behind it. The real test comes Wednesday, when Meta and Tesla report and show whether AI spending still holds up.

Until then, the market is trading on relief, not evidence.

Tech is leading the rebound. It’s a light data day, so earnings and yields will drive trading.

What’s moving the market: Investors are buying beaten-down chip stocks, oil is lower, and Treasury yields have eased slightly.

TODAY’S CATALYSTS

  • Before open: Fifth Third (FITB), Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF)

  • 10:00 AM: NAHB Housing Market Index

  • After close: Steel Dynamics (STLD), Zions (ZION), Western Alliance (WAL), W.R. Berkley (WRB)

  • All week: The Fed is in its quiet period ahead of the Oct. 27–28 meeting.

Most important: Tonight’s regional bank reports. With mortgage rates around 7.4% and the 10-year above 5%, Zions and Western Alliance will show how higher rates are affecting loan demand and credit quality.

Can't Buy the Next Big AI IPO Yet? Watch These 3 Stocks.

Wall Street is preparing for what could become one of the biggest AI IPOs in history. But ordinary investors may have to wait until shares begin publicly trading to participate directly.

Meanwhile, three publicly traded companies could offer exposure to the AI infrastructure and investment boom surrounding Anthropic. Two are familiar names. The third is a lesser-known company that many investors haven't connected to the story.

A new, free briefing reveals all three tickers, potential entry prices, and a bonus fourth company holding thousands of patents tied to the AI race.

THE BIG STORY
The AI Trade’s Problem Isn’t Demand. It’s Debt

Last week’s selloff wasn’t about AI demand drying up. It was about how the buildout gets paid for.

CoreWeave plunged 11.9% Friday, bringing its weekly loss to 23.7%. The AI cloud company has roughly $50 billion in debt, and the yield on its 2031 bonds climbed above 16%.

This morning, buyers are back. Broadcom is up 2.3% premarket and Nvidia 1.1%, while Intel is up 3.8% after JPMorgan upgraded it to “neutral.”

What this means for investors: Watch Meta’s spending guidance Wednesday more closely than its earnings per share. If the biggest tech companies keep funding AI from cash flow, chip stocks can recover.

If the buildout leans more on borrowed money at 5% rates, the market will keep demanding a discount.

Panic is a financial news strategy. Clarity is ours.

Markets move. Headlines catastrophise. But somewhere inside the noise is the story that matters — the opportunity, not the fear.

The Daily Upside was built by Wall Street insiders to find it — global business and finance, reported without the alarm.

BREAKING NEWS
Washington Takes Some Pressure Off Oil

Brent fell 1.8% to around $107 after President Trump waived some sanctions on Russia. Secretary of State Rubio said the president would take up to 60 days to assess the economic impact.

That matters because energy is driving the inflation story. September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, and producer prices jumped 6.3%.

Traders now see about a 16% chance of an October Fed hike, but still around 89% odds of one by December.

The catch: Iran reported that another tanker hit a mine in the Strait of Hormuz. The supply risk hasn’t gone away.

PORTFOLIO INSIGHTS

If oil keeps falling: Relief for airlines, consumers, and inflation expectations. Pressure on the energy names that led Friday.

If the 10-year holds above 5%: Pressure on growth stocks and homebuilders. Savers and income investors get paid to wait.

If Meta’s capex disappoints: Chip, power, and data-center stocks take the hit, not just META.

TODAY’S BIG IDEA

5% Treasuries

The opportunity: Locking in Treasury yields above 5%.

Why now: You can earn 5%+ from Treasuries while stocks deal with stretched AI valuations and a Fed that may still raise rates.

Bull case: If growth slows or AI spending cools, yields could fall and bond prices would rise, on top of the income you collect.

Risk: Hot inflation could push yields higher before they come down.

Watch: The Oct. 28 Fed decision.

RISK RADAR

AI Credit Stress

Stocks are bouncing this morning. Credit markets haven’t confirmed the recovery yet.

Five-year credit default swap spreads for CoreWeave and Oracle reached record levels last week. These spreads measure what investors pay to insure against a default. When bond investors start pricing in risk, stock investors usually follow.

Watch: Whether CoreWeave’s bonds stabilize this week.

THE WATCHLIST

  • INTC +3.8%: JPMorgan upgrade. Watch whether the premarket gain holds after the open.

  • AVGO +2.3%: Leading the chip rebound. It’s a clean read on whether big investors are buying the AI dip.

  • FITB: Reports before the bell. It’s the first regional bank of the day, so watch loan growth and credit quality.

FOLLOW THE MONEY

Money is quietly betting against bonds.

Speculators added 91,621 contracts to their net short position in 10-year Treasury futures, bringing it to 988,102. A net short is a bet that bond prices will fall and yields will rise.

Friday’s best S&P 500 performers were Targa Resources (+4.37%), Diamondback Energy (+4.27%), and Kinder Morgan (+4.20%), all energy names, while tech sank.

That’s capital rotating toward real assets and cash flow.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Stocks open with relief, but the bounce has nothing to back it up until Meta and Tesla report Wednesday. The bigger variable is a 10-year yield above 5%, which pressures every stock priced on future growth.

Stay patient with tech, collect income where you can, and let earnings decide the next move.
